Nestled within the charming Village Institute on Robin Lane in the idyllic Troutbeck, Windermere, The Old Post Office Tea Room Troutbeck offers a heartwarming retreat for tea lovers and wanderers alike. This delightful tea house captures the quintessential English tearoom experience, pairing rustic village charm with lovingly crafted homemade treats and quality beverages.
From the moment you step inside, the cozy ambiance welcomes you with the comforting glow of a wood burner and the subtle aroma of freshly brewed tea. The tea selection is one of the highlights here, featuring “Tea from the Manor” – a carefully sourced English Breakfast tea that is brewed loose-leaf and served in elegant fine bone china teapots and cups. Whether you come solo or with a friend, the soothing ritual of pouring and sipping tea here feels like a warm embrace.
The menu, though modest, is thoughtfully curated to complement the tea offerings perfectly. Start with their most popular treat: three sizzling rashers of bacon nestled inside a locally baked, artisan ciabatta—crispy, smoky, and utterly satisfying at just £4.95. For a more nourishing option, their homemade hearty soup accompanied by toasted sourdough bread offers a wholesome, warming experience especially welcome after a lakeside stroll.
But it’s the cakes and baked goods that truly steal the show. The homemade crumbly fruit scones served with a generous dollop of fresh clotted cream and strawberry jam have enchanted visitors, earning heartfelt praise for their perfect balance of crumbly texture and rich, buttery flavors. For those with a sweeter tooth, the locally made flapjacks in assorted flavors and the luscious tiffin biscuit—chocolate, cherry, and biscuit fragments all melting delightfully together—are irresistible. Other guests rave about the zesty lemon cake and apple crumble, which exemplify the care and passion poured into every bite.
Customer reviews paint a vivid picture of the tea room’s charm. Visitors consistently highlight not just the superb quality of food and beverages but also the warm, welcoming spirit of the staff. Customers describe feeling genuinely cared for, their experiences enhanced by the friendly atmosphere and personal touches like dog-friendly attitudes and the inviting wood burner on chilly days. One satisfied guest called it “one of the best tearooms” they encountered during their entire holiday in the Lakes, capturing the deep affection that many feel for this hidden gem.
Whether you are refueling after a scenic hike on the Wansfell or Jenkin Crag loop, seeking a quiet spot to relax with a book, or simply craving an authentic British tea experience, The Old Post Office Tea Room Troutbeck offers comfort, quality, and soul-satisfying treats. It’s a place where tradition and genuine hospitality combine beautifully, creating moments that linger warmly long after the last sip of tea.

Came across this delightful place on our circular hike from Ambleside. The staff here were outstanding and we felt very welcomed. The yummy scones were homemade and served with fresh clotted cream. Great prices given the portion size and quality. Worth a visit!

This cozy place is a true jem. The home made apple crumble, zesty lemon cake and scones that we have tried were amazing! The owners and staff were welcoming, you can feel they put their heart in this place. One of the best tearooms we have experienced during our holiday at the lakes.

Fantastic little cafe! Good coffee and super friendly. Menu looked great but we were too early for lunch. Well worth a stop! Ice cream too!

Wonderful to find this warm tearoom (with woodburner) on a wet November Sunday afternoon. Delicious coffee, hot chocolate, flapjack and Honeycomb Crunch on this occasion and previously we have enjoyed generous pots of tea and apple pie. Interesting Lake District books to browse while eating. Now that we have discovered the not-so-steep path through the churchyard and up to the tearoom, we are likely to come again. Thank you so much.

Hands down the best bacon ciabatta in the Lakes ( and I’ve tried a few ). Lovely people too and in a great spot on the Wansfell/Jenkin Crag loop. One of my favourite places to stop.

Lovely tea room with the friendliest staff (who are dog lovers too). Tea brewed in a pot served in china cups - and the sausage rolls & cheese scones were delicious too. We've already visited twice this holiday - it really is that good!

Loved it here whilst on some bike rides in the area. I had sausage roll, carrot cake and pot of tea for one, came to £10.95, really pleased and will return when in the area again
